Imagine the bluest sky with fluffy cotton ball clouds and an ocean full of intricate coral and phenomenal sea life. If you’ve got vacation time and you’re heading out, there are plenty of things to do in Cozumel, Mexico. Cozumel attractions offer everything from quiet relaxation and snorkeling to shark dives and exploration adventures through the Mayan Ruins.  Cozumel welcomes each and everyone to see their wondrous tourist spots and attractions. This is one of Mexico’s finest and most diverse towns on the Yucatan peninsula.

 Cozumel is an escape from a busy city. It is inexpensive, pleasurable, and offers a variety of activities for the whole family.

Today Cozumel is renowned in the diving world. They have remarkable coral reefs and ample marine life. Drift diving is the custom here, which means that your dive boat will drop you off at a site with your dive master, follow your bubbles while you are underwater, and then pick you up at the end of your dive. The currents can sometimes be rapid, however many divers enjoy drift diving because it is less work. In reality, the current does you’re swimming for you. In Cozumel, the same as with most other dive locations, it is suggested that you dive with a small operation.

There are also “cattle boats” that you can take, most likely less expensive; nevertheless it is better joy to go with a smaller group.  In that way, there are fewer people in the water with you, which greatly intensifies your chances of seeing the larger sea life, like turtles or dolphins. Besides, it is safer to take a smaller boat, they are more personalized and there is less chance of being left behind.

If you dive in Cozumel, you can look ahead to see some really big Groupers, lots of Rainbow Parrotfish, quite a few barracudas and maybe even a Nurse Shark or an Octopus if you are fortunate! We’ve been a few times and are never disappointed in the underwater sites.

For those Cozumel vacationers who prefer to stay above the surface but want to explore the underwater world, snorkeling is fantastic.  It’s not unusual to see these same fish, you just enjoy them from 10-20 feet above them. 

 Moreover, near to your hotel, another great spot to visit and snorkel is Chankanaab Park. This park has exceptional areas for snorkeling and lots of cool, shady huts called palapas, for lounging and soothing rest. Chankanaab also provides snorkels and fins to rent for a small amount.

Additionally, if you interested in the history of Mexico, Chankanaab has an Archaeological Park with a beautiful walking path that winds through replicas of famous ruins. Be certain to seek for the colorful iguanas as they sun themselves on the stone statues, or as they dart across the dirt paths!

Why not visit the authentic ruins of Tulum (pictured left) while others are enjoying the replicas at Chankanaab? Tulum is an impressive Mayan site, dating back to A.D. 564, with an incredible location overlooking the Caribbean.  There are lots of historical spots near to Cozumel.  Some historical sites are found in the jungle of Mexico like Chichen Itza. These ruins date back to 800 A.D. and they are much larger than Tulum. We spent about 2 hours here and was able to see it all.

Chichen Itza (pictured right) was the historical, political and social hub of the Yucatan. You can still climb over the main pyramid there, named El Castillo, which offers an incredible view when you reach the top. This place would be an excellent day trip while staying in Cozumel, especially if you would like to see a different side of Mexico like the jungle, as it contrasting the coast.

Once you have traveled around the island, both underwater and above ground, you are bound to be hungry, right? No worries, Cozumel offers an extensive range of restaurants, from casual to fast food to fancy. One conventional favorite, called Primos, has terrific food with pretty reasonable prices. They have an outdoors patio upstairs, and the menu usually includes a bargain-priced surf & turf with very fresh steak and lobster tail.

After you eat, why not see the sights of the town square and explore the shops? The alluring downtown area centers on a large fountain. It’s cool to just go sit by the square and people watch, or watch the local artists making vividly colored spray-paintings. During weekends, there are often events like concerts and dances in the square. It’s an enchanting little town, ideal to visit after a hard day of diving, snorkeling or relaxing!

Saving the best for last, sometimes relaxing at your hotel is one of the finest ways to complete a day. Many of the hotels on the island have artificial beaches with palapas. You can endure and have your relaxing moment under a cool palapa, and enjoy drinks and snacks from the hotel, brought right out to your lounge chair. Then again, you could take a refreshing swim in the hotel swimming pool, often with swim-up bars. You really do feel coddled in Cozumel!
