I know from experience what separation anxiety from the phone and laptop is. I can’t even run to the grocery without my phone, let alone go days without it. It’s like disconnecting a body part and living without it. But wait? For centuries people took vacations without phones and laptops. Recently my husband and I went on a Royal Caribbean Cruise and my husband opted for bringing the phone and the laptop. Much to my happiness, the phone was left off until coming back into the port at the end of the cruise and the laptop sat in the corner of the room the entire time, untouched. At first it was because the rates for calling were crazy, something like $5 a minute. So we got over it real fast. And, what do you know? We had a great time, and the world didn’t fall apart when we couldn’t be reached. We were proud of ourselves.

It’s important to let yourself just unwind, relax, have fun, notice the little things in life like how the cool of the breeze off the ocean smells and how the warm sun on your heavily relaxed body feels, or stand in awe of the beautiful mountains and canyons if you camp. Wherever you are and whatever you do, just quiet yourself: listen, observe, notice how much life there is without laptops and cell phones. Take time to live your life on vacation. When you’re tempted to think about work, tell yourself it’s not time to do that. If you find yourself thinking too much about work, deliberately focus your attention away from those thoughts. Read a book, watch a ballgame, engage in a conversation, go for a swim, enjoy a hobby, sing a song, do something. Keep work at work, for now you have yourself to treat.
